I started this blog a few years ago to collect charts, data, and the like in one place on various topics instead of responding to people in comments long-form and having to re-create the wheel every time. Since then I have started to create more content just for the blog with more original research, long-form analysis, etc. (My more recent material tends to be of higher quality.)
I’ve been seeing this studdy pop up a lot. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/10511482.2013.771788
I was wondering whether you had come across it or can parse out how the analysis has been done and any alternate hypothesis other than the one it’s typically used to support. Thanks.
Are you really anonymous? This is absolutely tragic. You need to emerge from the shadows to take up your rightful place (your highest and best professional use, in fact) as by far the most competent health care policy analyst at the Cato Institute.
Yes, I am genuinely writing under a pseudonym. I’m not sure if this is intended as a backhanded compliment, but for whatever it’s worth, I’m not with Cato or any other libertarian organization. Indeed, while I had some significant libertarian sympathies when I was younger, I honestly would not identify as a libertarian today. I’m not saying Cato does, but I wouldn’t want to work for any organization that expected ideological conformity, partly because my preferences and beliefs do not neatly align with any camp and partly because a fair-minded reading of the evidence should cause one to come to conclusions that are sometimes in tension with their own beliefs and policy preferences.
Further, my work here is mainly descriptive. While people on the left may be more resistant to my analysis for ideological reasons or simply out of undue deference to expertise (which, incidentally, isn’t nearly as cut and dried as many seem to believe), my work here isn’t ideological or even much informed by my ideological commitments. My analysis of health care, education, and other topics has significantly influenced the thinking of many intelligent and fair-minded people on all sides.
